The Jeff Musser Foundation
In 1999, I was diagnosed with acute leukemia. My choices at that time were to get in to remission and have a bone marrow transplant or to try and endure a 2-year chemotherapy program when I got into remission. My doctors felt if I could survive the 2-year chemo program my chances of longer life would be better.
We have been helping families since 2003 and have continued the golf tournament every year raising enough money to give out approximately $31,000.00 this year.
I chose to take the 2-year program, and during the time I was making this decision, my friends were already planning a golf tournament in my name to raise funds for me as I was going through my treatments. Fortunately after my 2 years of treatment, I didn`t need the money, and this is how the foundation got started. I just needed to decide what to do with the monies raised.
Looking back over those 2 years, the hardest thing for me was to watch children and their families going through the same thing as I. So I decided to use the monies to give financial aid to families with children in Lancaster County battling cancer. We have been helping families since 2003 and have continued the golf tournament every year raising enough money to give out approximately $40,000.00 this year.
The children we are helping see Lancaster pediatric doctors and then are sent to Hershey for treatment. The social workers at Hershey then contact me with a list of families that are in need of assistance. I visit the families and pick 6 or 7 that I feel need the most help. Most of these are 2-income families that go to one income because of the need to take care of their child and constantly going to doctor appointments and chemo treatments. The foundation will usually pay things like rent or mortgages, utilities, insurances, and travel expenses for treatments. We are making a difference in these families lives and have given out over $200,000.00 since 2003.
